Abstract

This research is performed on behalf of Portavita (developer of a transmural electronic patient record) as a final assignment for the Bachelor education Biomedical Engineering. The research is focused on the management of diabetes, in particular the development of the digipen solution in combination with the transmural electronic patient record (EPR) of Portavita. To determine the needs of the users relating to diabetes management and the products offered by the manufacturers, interviews were conducted and a literature study was performed. The interviews with users were aimed at the currently used diabetes disease management systems, the bottlenecks and problems and what should be improved according to the users. The interviews with manufacturers were done to investigate current technological developments in diabetes management. The literature study is used to get a good impression of the clinical condition of diabetes and its management, to form a picture of the facts and fiction surrounding new developments and the success factors for these new developments.
